Flipper

This band was amazing. If you don’t know them -and that’s highly possible because they are now ancient, then you need to find yourself a copy of the Generic album! The first time I heard it, it blew my mind. It was so different -so weird and psych, and still punk as hell. I didn’t even know you could make music like that. Trust me, fucking discover Flipper!

The latest leg of L.A. Weekly’s Re:Play L.A. series saw Sun Araw and Warm Climate covering Teenage Fanclub’s Bandwagonesque at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood.

RE:Play L.A. spotlights local acts across genres and pairs them with a classic album they love and have always wanted to pay tribute to. Can’t say that I was all too surprised when I first heard the album they intended to cover; Sun Araw covered Teenage Fanclub’s “December” on his Houston Abstros 7”. Was an excellent night for Britpop and psych fans complete with drunken reminiscing.

dearest radiant meat:

i’ll see your own florida psych-garage and raise you local florida psych-garage. ray knows these guys and i’ve been trying to put together a “we the people” tribute band but haven’t had much luck… might be because i want to name it “we, we the people.” but what am i, some marketing genius? (answer: of course i am) and dude, you know the song of one of these guys and blah blah blah… i own this original 45 you see in the picture - unless you have it and i don’t remember letting you borrow it. they also recently did a re-release on 180 gram a year or so ago… speaking of borrowing i’m pretty sure you have my original pressing of joy division peel sessions right? i distinctly remember letting you borrow that and then you were like, i’m totally not gonna give it back… right?

Dear E. Brown,

First off, this song is rad, very rad! Second, your jedi tricks will not work with me…

Oddly enough though, that record did sorta just land in my lap -not the way that you tell, but it was a kinda cosmic acquisition. An old friend literally (figuratively speaking) tossed about half a dozen amazing records from that time period at me and asked me if I wanted any of them -every one was just fucking mint and first pressing …Joy Division 12” singles, Bauhaus 12” singles, Tones on Tail -crazy cool shit! Anyway, I think I gave him $50 for the lot and said something like “yeah sure man, I mean if you don’t want them anymore” But my unfortunate friend, that was divine synchronicity, if you wanna get your little paws on a copy you’re gonna have to do the work and keep diggin -or there’s always ebay… hey look!, item # 170676609964. …all kidding aside EB, gimme my Pere Ubu record back and you can borrow it

XOXO

My friend Ray at Rock-n-Roll Heaven just gave me this amazing comp of 60’s Florida garage and soul, it’s kinda put me on a tangent for the stuff.

Been loving this song. First time I’ve seen the vid. If you can’t wait for the album, check out their bandcamp to pick up the ep for 5 little american dollars ($12 for vinyl).

Far-Out Fangtooth - What I Have Hurts

Diggin’ this video by Vince Alvaré for one of Philly’s punkest lo-fi garage acts. These guys have been rocking the DIY house show scene here since before their “Pathways/Why Don’t You Cry” 7” came out on Ian Records from last summer. I’m looking forward to more shows and raucous tunes from these dudes soon!

Hello, my music lovers…  I’ve missed you. I’m sorry I disappeared for so long.
